Veeranchira Bhagavathy Theyyam is a Mother Goddess theyyam that is performed in numerous kavu tharavadu and temples across Kannur region of Kerala. As per information Veeranchira Bhagavathy, is the manifestation of Goddess Kali who appeared to annihilate Darikasura. The story of Veeranchira Bhagavathy theyyam is that of her appearing before the main member of a family or taking abode or aaroodam in a tharavadu or under a sacred tree. She sometimes protects the family or destroys the family for some reason. To keep her in control, she is given a place in home or sacred place. A theyyam is performed annually to keep her happy and content.
Veeranchira Bhagavathy has one of the biggest ‘mudi’ (headgear) in theyyams. She also has prominent silver protruding teeth. She also holds a shield and sword.
Veeranchira Bhagavathy theyyam is performed annually at Azhikode Sree Arayambrath Kottam in Kannur region from March 28 to March 30.
