Dharma Daivam Theyyam – Story – Information

Dharma Daivam is a very popular theyyam that is performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod region of Kerala. As per information, this is a male theyyam and is the family deity. Dharma daivam story is that of God appearing to solve the crisis in the human world arising out of the fight between Dharma and Adharma. Some scholars connect the theyyam with family deity – thus Dharma daivam is also known as Kula daivam or Kudumba Daivam.

The theyyam is offered prayers to overcome fear of enemies. It is also worshiped for peace and prosperity. It is said that one should offer prayers first to Dharma Daivam before visiting any temple.

Dharma Daivam holds a sword and shield. This indicates that he fights injustice and protects his devotees especially the families in which he is worshipped.
