Vadakkumbad Kunnummalkandi Devi Temple – Theyyam – Thira – Kaliyattam Festival

Vadakkumbad Kunnummalkandi Devi temple is located at Vadakkumbad near Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Devi or Goddess Bhagavathy. The annual theyyam-thira festival in Kunnummal Kandi Devi  temple is held for two days in Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 16 and Dhanu 17 (December 31 to January 1).

This is a small traditional Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil. There are no major structures. Other deities popularly worshipped in Kavu and temples in Kannur region are also worshipped in the temple in small sreekovils and square platforms.

The theyyams that are performed in this temple are Raktheshwari theyyam, Sasthappan or Kuttichathan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam and Vishnumoorthy theyyam.

The annual festival days are noted various unique pujas and rituals, melam, decoration, fireworks and traditional temple performing art forms.

Sankranti and Vishu are important days in the temple. Vellarattam, pratishta dinam and other rituals of tharavadu and kavu are performed in the temple.
