Kanhileri Ardha Chamundi Temple – Thira – Theyyam Festival

Kanhileri Ardha Chamundi temple is located at Sreekandapuram in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Devi or Goddess Bhagavathy. The annual theyyam-thira festival in the temple is held for three days in Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 12, Dhanu 13 and Dhanu 14 (December 27 to December 29).

This is a small traditional Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil. There are no major structures. Other deities popularly worshipped in Kavu and temples in Kannur region are also worshipped in the temple in small sreekovils and square platforms.


The theyyams that are performed in this temple are Ardha Chamundi theyyam, Baali theyyam, Malakkari theyyam, Nagakanya theyyam and Thekkan Gulikan theyyam.

The annual festival days are noted various unique pujas and rituals, melam, decoration, fireworks and traditional temple performing art forms.

Sankranti and Vishu are important days in the temple.

Vellattam, pratishta dinam and other rituals of tharavadu and kavu are performed in the temple. Thalappoli, lalitha sahasranama, Bhagavathy thottam are part of the annual festival.
