Edakkeppuram Kovvathila Sree Puthiya Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam – Thira Festival

Edakkeppuram Kovvathila Sree Puthiya Bhagavathi temple is located at Edakkeppuram near Kannapuram in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and other popular deities that are worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in Kannur region. The annual theyyam kaliyattam thira festival in the temple is held for three days in Makara Masam – Makaram 5, Makaram 6 and Makaram 7 (January 19 and January 21).

The theyyams that are performed in this temple during kaliyattam festival are Bhairavan theyyam, Karuvval theyyam, Khandakarnan theyyam, Puthiya Bhagavathy theyyam, Thaiparadevatha theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Uchitta Bhagavathy theyyam, Veera Kali theyyam, Veeran theyyam and Vishnumoorthi theyyam.

This is a small traditional Kerala style temple with a small chathura sreekovil. There are no major structures. Other deities popularly worshipped in Kavu and temples in Kannur region are also worshipped in the temple in small sreekovils and square platforms. Sankranti and Vishu are important days in the temple.

The annual festival days are noted various unique pujas and rituals, melam, decoration, fireworks and traditional temple performing art forms.
