Cherupazhassi Kandanar Poyil Sree Muchilottu Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam festival

Kandanar Poyil Sree Muchilottu Bhagavathi temple is located at Mayyil – Cherupazhassi in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Devi or Bhagavathy. The annual theyyam and kaliyattam festival in the temple is held for two days on Malayalamasam Makaram 11 and Makaram 12 (January 25 and January 26).

This is a typical tharavadu maintained temple or kavu seen across Kannur district. The main shrine is with a small decorated chathura sreekovil. The other deities are worshipped on square platforms and also in small sreekovils.


The important theyyams performed here during the annual festival are Kannangattu Bhagavathy, Muchilottu Bhagavathy, Narambil Bhagavathy, Nittamkulangara Bhagavathy, Puliyoor Kali Theyyam and Vishnumurthy Theyyam.

Melam, Shakteya pujas and rituals, traditional temple art forms, music and other folklore programs are part of the temple rituals and festivities.

Vishu (April 14 or April 15) is an important festival in the temple. The shrine also observes various other important festivals and rituals in a Malayalam calendar year.
