Kandalloor Puthiyavila Vadakkan Koickal Temple – Festival

Kandalloor Puthiyavila Vadakkan Koickal temple is located near at Puthiyavila Kandalloor near Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The 10-day annual festival in the temple is held in Kumbha Masam (February – March) and it coincides with the Kumbha Bharani day. Another festival in the temple coincides with Meena Bharani day in Meena Masam (March – April).

The sankalpam of Bhagavathy here is that of Goddess Parvati. The upa devatas worshipped in the temple Shiva, Goddess Bhadrakali, Sastha, Naga Devatas, Khandakarna, Yakshi and Brahmarakshas.

The main specialty of Vadakkan Koyikkal temple is that the sreekovil or main temple is two stories. Goddess Parvati the main murti is placed in ground floor and Mahadeva Shiva is placed on the 1st floor.

Kettukazhcha is celebrated on 9th and 10th day of the annual festival. Caparisoned elephants, melam, traditional performing art forms of Kerala and various other rituals and pujas are part of the annual. Navaha Yajnam is another 9-day festival and is famous for pujas and rituals and annadanam.

This is a beautiful Kerala style temple with a magnificent chuttambalam, namaskara mandapam, two tier sreekovil and shrines of upa devatas.

The temple observes Vrischika Masam with various rituals, Navratri and Thrikarthika.
