Kalighat Temple Kali Puja Bhog – Food Offering On Diwali Night Kali Puja

At Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, on Diwali night, both Kali Puja and Lakshmi Puja are performed. The number of dishes in the daily puja bhog does not change, only the quantity is increased for the special day. The entire cost of the bhog on the day of the puja falls upon the Paladar (the specific priest whose turn it is to serve the deity). Kalighat temple has around 600 Sebayets (attendants/priests). On Kali Puja day, the designated Paladar and about 150 other Sebayets make offerings.

One round of bhog is offered to Ma Kali before the Amavasya (New Moon) tithi begins. This offering includes:

Shukto (a bitter-sweet mixed vegetable dish)

Five types of fried items (bhaja) (potato, brinjal, pointed gourd, bitter gourd/gourd, and raw banana)

Pulao (fragrant rice dish)

Three types of fish preparations (Rohu, Hilsa, Prawn)

Mutton of a young goat

Chutney (date-dried mango pulp-pineapple)

Payesh (rice pudding)

Betel leaf (Pan) and water.
