Cheriazheekal Vadakkenada Bhagavathy Temple – Festival

Cheriazheekal Devi temple, also known as Cheriazheekal Vadakkenada Bhagavathy temple, is located at Alappad near Karunagappally in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi. The annual festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Meda Masam (April – May) and is known as the Thottam Pattu Utsavam.

The sankalpam of Bhagavathy here is that of Kannagi. The shrine is located near the sea shore. Shiva has equal importance in the temple.

The annual pongala festival in the temple is unique as it is held at night during the annual festival in Medam month.

This is a typical Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam and shrines of upa devatas.

The annual festival has several unique rituals and pujas including Thottam pattu, Thiruvabharana Ghosha yatra, Radha Chalanam of Devi and Devi Dakshina. Goddess Bhagavathy in the temple comes out only during the annual festival period.

Chembattu and Suvarna Thali are offered on Malavyeppu day during the annual festival.  This is done to remove all kinds of problems related to marriage.

The shrine also observes various other festivals and rituals including Navratri and Thrikarthika festival.
