Changanassery Vazhappally Annapoorneshwari Temple – Festival

Changanassery Vazhappally Annapoorneshwari temple is located at Vazhappally in Changanassery, Kottayam district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Annapoorna. The annual festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Meena Masam (March – April) and it concludes on Medam 1 (Vishu day).

This is a typical Kerala style temple with a chathura sreekovil, namaskara mandapam and shrines of upa devatas.

The upa devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathy, Sri Krishna, Yakshi, Yogeeswaran, Amman, Mada Swamy and Bhairava.

The shrine is maintained by the goldsmith community.

The annual festival is famous for unique pujas and rituals that are part of Shakti worship in South India. Melam, ezhunnallathu, homam, abhishekam and performing art forms of temple are part of the festival. Thengayeru, kumbham ezhunellippu, kumbha abhishekam, vazhipadu karakam, and agni praveshanam are some of the important rituals.

The festival concludes with Arttu ceremony and the oorkarakkam ritual.
