Kakkoor Ambassery Kavu Temple – Festival - Kakkoor Kalavayal

Kakkoor Ambassery Kavu temple is located at Kakkoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali (Bhagavathi). Kakkoor Kalavayal 2024 date is February 17 and February 18. The annual festival in the temple is observed on Karthika and Rohini nakshatra in Kumbha Masam (February – March). The festival coincides with the famous Kakkoor Kalavayal festival. 

Kakkoor Ambassery Kavu is a traditional Kerala style temple with a chuttambalam, namaskara mandapam and small temples of Upa Devatas.

The annual festival is famous for Tantric pujas and rituals. Caparisoned elephants, traditional Kerala temple art forms and melam are part of the annual festival. A small fair is held in the temple premises on the occasion.

 The historic Kakkoor Kalavayal festival is associated with Thirumarady Edapra Bhagavathi Temple and Ambassery Kavu Temple. The belief is that the deities are sisters and they meet once in a year during the festival period.

During this period, temple provides free food (kanji, puzhukku) for those attending the festival.

Kakkoor Kalavayal festival is held on Karthika and Rohini nakshatra in Kumbha Masam.

As per local history, the farmers of the region used to meet for exchange of goods. It was an agrarian festival of the region. Traders and farmers used to actively participate in the festival.

The festival is now famous for kalavandi ottam (bullock cart races), maramadi and other traditional activities. The temple now organizes motocross.
