Bhoothakulam Dharma Sastha Temple – Festival

Bhoothakulam Dharma Sastha temple is located at Boothakulam (Poothakulam) on Parippally - Paravur road in Kollam district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Dharmasastha (Ayyappa). The 8-day annual festival in the temple concludes with arattu on Uthram nakshatra day in Meena masam.

The temple has a chathura sreekovil with a Sastha Vigraham in sitting posture. The shrine has a nalambalam, kodimaram (flag pole) and namaskara mandapam. Sastham kulam, the temple pond, is located on the north side. The temple has huge paddy field on one side. There are very old peepal trees in the temple compound. Kadiyathi upa devata is worshipped in the shrine. Navagrahas are worshipped in the temple.


The annual festival in the temple is famous for pujas and rituals associated with Sastha temple. The festival is also famous for various traditional Kerala temple art forms including Kathakali, Chakyarkoothu, Naadan paattu, Shinkari melam, Nangiarkoothu and Villadichan pattu.

The highlight of the festival is the Nedunkuthirayeduppu – huge tall beautifully decorated structure is pulled to the temple on the festival day. Kala, caparisoned elephants, ezhunnallathu and melam are the other highlights.

Other important festivals in the temple include Aazhi maholsavam and Pushpabhishekam. The temple has special spiritual programs during the Mandalakalam.  

Shivratri is another important occasion in the temple.
