Thiruvilwamala Poothanakara Shiva Temple – Festival

Thiruvilwamala Poothanakara Shiva temple is located at Poothanakara near Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Mahadeva – Shiva. The annual Maha Shivratri festival which falls on February or March (Malayalam Kumbha Masam) is an important day in Poothanakara Shiva kshetram.

This is a small temple – the sreekovil has a Shivling which is of ancient origin. The upa devatas worshipped include Devi and Ganapathy. The shrine has a namaskara mandapam with a Nandi or Rishabham.

The Shivratri festival is noted for abhishekam, dhara, Tantric pujas and rituals, homam etc.

Mondays and Saturdays are of great significance here.

Thiruvathira in Dhanu Masam is another important festival here.
