Mayannur Kavu Sri Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple – Festival

Mayannur Kavu Sri Kurumba Bhagavathy temple is located at Kondazhy in Thrissur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The 10-day annual festival in the temple is famous as Mayannur Pooram.

The Pooram festival begins on the Punartham nakshatram in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March – April) and last for 10 days. The Kodiyettu or flag hoisting marks the beginning of the festivities.

Display of caparisoned elephants, pageantry and procession are the main events during the festival.

Caparisoned elephants are taken out in a procession along with the thidambu of the deity to the accompaniment of traditional percussion music or Panchavadyam. Thalappoli is another important event during the festival. Hundreds of women carry thalams or plates decorated with lamps, incense, flowers etc as part of the Thalappoli ritual.

The annual Pongala festival and kalamezhuthu pattu in the temple is held in Makram month (January – February).

The annual pratishta festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Edava masam (May - June).
