Panavally Sri Kandeshwara Mahadeva Temple - Festival

Panavally Sri Kandeshwara Mahadeva temple is located at Panavally near Cherthala in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The temple is of great importance as the murti worshipped in the shrine was consecrated by Sri Narayana Guru. The annual festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Meena Masam (March - April).

As per local belief it is said that a heavy shivling which was carried by eight people was lifted alone by Sri Narayana Guru and installed in the temple. The pratishta in the temple was done on Kollavarsham 1097 Edavam 17 (30, May 1922 CE).

The Shivling worshipped in the temple is carved in single granite stone.

Mahashivratri is of great importance here. Special pujas are held on Mondays. Pradosham is a fortnight is of great significance.

The festival begins with kodiyettam and concludes with Arattu ceremony. The annual festival is famous for procession, ezhunnallathu, melam, traditional performing art forms of Kerala.
