Thaliyil Neelakandeshwar Temple – Nileshwar - Thaliyil Neelakanteswara - History - Festival

Thaliyil Neelakandeshwar temple is located at Nileshwar in Kasaragod district, Kerala. Thaliyil Neelakanteswara is also known as Nileswaram Thali. The darshanam of the temple is towards east. The deity is popularly known as Thaliyilappan.

The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathy, Sastha and Vishnu. Bhagavan Vishnu is known as Vadakkum Thevar.

A special puja known as Netra Puja is held here. The pujaris of the shrine are from the Shivalli Brahmin community.

The 8-day annual festival in the temple ends with Arattu in Kumbham month (February - March). The annual pratishta festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Meda Masam (April - May).

As per local belief, initially the shrine was a Vishnu temple. The temple belongs to Nileswaram Kovilakam. Amma Thampuratti of Nileshwaram Raja family had a divine vision in her sleep and this resulted in the establishment of the temple. As per the divine enlightenment she had the Nileshwar Thaliyil Temple in the same replica of Kozhikode Thaliyil Shiva temple.

As per local legend, the Shivling worshiped in the temple was consecrated by Sage Neela.

The renovation and kalasa mahotsava of the was carried out after a gap of nearly 17 decades from 19th of February to 4th March 2009.
