Parasuvaikkal Bhagavathy Temple Festival - Story

Parasuvaikkal Bhagavathy temple is located at Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. The 10-day annual festival in the temple is held from Karthika nakshatra in Meenam month. The flag hoisting or kodiyettam is performed on the day.

The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The goddess is worshipped on a swayambhu shila which does not have any specific form. The Devi chaithanyam was found when a girl accidently hit the shila with her sickle. Blood started oozing out from the shila and this led to the discovery of the Parasuvaikkal Bhagavathy.

The main deity faces west. The Upa Devatas in the temple are Chempakamootil Bhagavathy, Ganapathy and Nagam.

The annual festival is noted for the performance of various rituals and pujas associated with Bhagavathy temples. Temple arts, dance, music cultural programs, spiritual discourse and solo performances are held during the festival period.
