Kapaleeshwar Temple at Nashik in Maharashtra – A Rare Shiva Temple without Nandi

Kapaleeshwar Temple is located at Ramkund in Nashik in Maharashtra. This is a very rare temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as there is no murti of Nandi facing the Shivling in the temple.

Legend has it that Shiva roamed around the earth after cutting off the fifth head of Shiva. He was looking for redemption of sin he commited by cutting the fifth head of Brahma.

It is said that at Ramkund, Nandi advised Shiva to have a holy dip in the Godavari River for redemption of sin.

Shiva attained redemption from sin.

Pleased with this act, Lord Shiva took Nandi as one of his gurus and so there is no murti of Nandi outside the Kapaleshwar Temple at Ramkund.

One has to climb a few steep steps to reach the shrine. In the sanctum sanctorum, there is an ancient Shivling.
