Ganga Mahotsava and Dev Deepawali at Varanasi – Adding more pollution to Ganga

Ganga Mahotsav and Dev Deepawali observed annually from Kartik Shukla Ekadasi to the Kartik Purnima day as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India. In 2024, Ganga Mahotsav and Dev Deepawali are from November 12 to November 15, 2024. The heritage and culture of Varanasi is highlighted during the festival. Many people believe that the festival is doing nothing to highlight the core issue in the region – pollution in Ganga.
Times of India reports
"Definitely it is good to celebrate city's uniqueness, but not at the cost of the Ganga's health. It has been experienced that the pollution level of the Ganga increases after every such festival when people turn up in large number on its banks. And it happens just due to lack of vision," said BD Tripathi, noted environmentalist of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and member of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA). "What organisers want to showcase for tourists through this festival a pollution ridden river or mockery of our faith, he wonders adding that organising festivals is welcomed but not such a manner to increase the pollution load of the river. There must be provisions to protect the health of the river," he said.
