Vaman Ekadasi – Vamana Ekadashi

Vaman Ekadasi is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in Bhadrapada month (August – September). Vamana Ekadashi is associated with the Lord Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Vamana appeared on the earth on this Ekadasi day. In 2024, the date of Vaman Ekadasi is September 14.

Lord Vamana appeared to end the rule of King Mahabali. Onam celebrations in Kerala which is based on the episode of King Bali and Lord Vishnu from the Puranas takes place during this period.

The significance of Vaman Ekadasi was narrated to Yudhisthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, by Lord Krishna. It is believed that those who observe this Ekadashi will be free from their sins.

All the usual fasting rules associated with Ekadasi are observed on the day.

In Gujarat, Vaman Ekadasi is known as Jal Jhilani Ekadashi. This Ekadasi is also known as Parsva Parivartini Ekadasi.
