Aadi Masam 2010 – Aadi Month in 2010 in Tamil Calendar

Aadi Masam, or Adi, is the fourth month in Tamil Calendar and is termed inauspicious by many as the Dakshinayana Punyakalam begins in the month. In 2010, the Aadi Masam begins on July 17 and ends on August 16. But several Tamil Hindu rituals and festivals are held in the month of Aadi and therefore it is also auspicious to some people.

Here are the important festivals and auspicious days in Aadi Masam in 2010

Dakshinayana Punyakalam, the night of the Devas, begins on the first day of the month Aadi. It is marked on July 17, 2010. Some communities perform Tarpanam on the day. The sun changes its direction during this period and next six months is the night time of the gods. Due to this reason, no auspicious events are held in the month.

Aadi Chevvai – the Tuesdays in Aadi Masam is highly auspicious.

Aadi Velli – Fridays in the Aadi Masam is also considered auspicious.

Aadi Amavasi (August 9, 2010) – No moon day in Aadi month dedicated to offering Shradh and Tarpan to dead ancestors. It must be note that in many regions Amavasai begins on August 9 and ends on August 10, 2010.

Aadi Pooram (August 12) – The day is dedicated to Andal.

Varalakshmi Puja (August 20) – Worship of Goddess Lakshmi.

Aadi Perukku (August 3) – The festival is dedicated to Kaveri River and falls on the eighteenth day in Aadi Masam.

Aadi Karthigai (August 4, 2010) – festival dedicated to Lord Muruga.

One final doubt!
Regarding some days in Aadi, do they always fall in the Aadi month on same day,
Aadi Pooram- Aadi 9
Varalakshmi puja- Aadi 15
Aadi Perukku - Aadi 18
Aadi Karthigai - Aadi 29

There is also a confusion, is Krishna Jayanthi on Aug. 13 or 14? Is Krishna Jayanthi one day or more than one day? Does it depend on where in India you live?

Aadi Perukku always falls on the 18th day of the Aadi month but the corresponding English calendar or Gregorian date will be different.

Rest of the days are always different. Like Aadi Pooram falls on the Pooram Nakshatra in Aadi month.

Sri Krishna Jayanti is observed on two days in different parts of India. The August 13 is more popular in western and southern parts of India. In North India it is on August 14

You can find more details about the two dates of Shri Krishna Jayanti here in this article

Abhilash, you are a treasure trove of information! Hope our thoughts back and forth help others. So, Pooram is based on the position of stars? Is Varalaskhmi and Karthigai also based on star or moon placements? That is why it is different then....

Karthigai is dependent on the Karthigai Star.

Varalakshmi Vrata is observed on a Friday in the month and this usually is not based on star but some other calculations. Fridays in Aadi is dedicated to Goddess worship.

Varalakshmi date is also dependent on calendars followed in neighboring states. But it usually falls on a friday in Aadi month.

Would it be inauspicious to sign an employment contract for a new job during adi masam ?
When is an auspicious day to commence a new job after adi masam ?
Thank you

@ ear piercing there should be no problem in performing it. You can do it. Aadi is a good month for Muruga.

@ an employment contract for a new job

You should go ahead and sign the contract. Jobs don't wait for months. Go sign it and join the job.

There are two school of thoughts. Some say Aadi is inauspicious. There are some who believe it is auspicious. Some of the important rituals are held in this month. So believe in almighty and go ahead.
