Uluka – The Owl as Vahana or Vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi

Uluka, the owl, is a lesser known vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Uluka is mainly associated with the opposite form of Goddess Lakshmi – Alakshmi, the Goddess of inauspiciousness. The owl associated with Laxmi is also known as Pechaka and is worshipped in eastern parts of India, especially in Bengal, during Lakshmi Puja.

In some regions, Uluka symbolizes wisdom and intelligence because of its ability to foretell events. But in majority of the regions, owl is a bird of ill omen and symbolically represents darkness, disgrace, inauspiciousness and misfortune.

Uluka becomes the vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi when the wealth and prosperity provided by Goddess Lakshmi is used by human beings for Adharmic activities. Symbolically, the wealth provided by Lakshmi blinds the person and takes to dishonesty and avarice. Blinded by the wealth they become greedy and destroy themselves.

It is also said that a wise person on seeing an owl with Goddess Lakshmi realizes the trap of wealth and its splendor. For such a person, the owl is the symbol of wisdom as the person uses the wealth for positive purposes.

@ pooja please do not read too much into such natural incidents. Watch it with curiosity and enjoy it and forget it. There is no bad omen or good omen for such incidents.

I often find an owl sitting on one corner of my house. It is the best spot it has in our area to hide from predators.

THank you so much! I recently was very drawn to a picture of a goddes with an owl, I felt like it was laskmi, but was questioning, and then the woman I got it from, told me it was lakshmi, but did not know anything about it, but that it is rare to find a picture and good luck! I have been working with owl medicine for so long and also seperately studying and interacting with different hindu dieties...Jai Ma! I am so grateful! thank you.

Since when is Laxmi worshiped? Since when is the image/idol associated with Laxmi i.e. that of a woman holding a chalice with gold pouring out etc symbolizes wealth? Is the image of Laxmi inspired from Ishtar, aAssyrian and Babylonian goddess associated with fertility, love, war, and sex. Btw Ishtar is shown standing between owls.
