Kali Tandav: The Dance of Dissolution and Awakening - Dance of Transformation as the Doorway to Truth Some truths cannot be explained - they can only be pointed toward. Kali Tandav is one such truth. It is not an event that happened once, nor a story with a beginning and an end. It is the eternal movement of Mahamaya, the infinite power through which the universe is created, sustained, dissolved, and created again. Her dance is called Tandav, and this dance is not mere motion. It is the pulse behind existence itself, the rhythm through which Kala, or time, dissolves back into its source. To call this "destruction" in the ordinary sense would be a mistake. Kali does not destroy for the sake of ending things. She transforms. Since she is creation herself, her every movement can only lead to renewal, never to true annihilation. An Everyday Example Imagine a potter working at the wheel. Before a beautiful pot can be shaped, the shapeless lump of clay must first lose its old...

Power Without Patience Is Loss: The Lesson of Shamika and Shringi in Mahabharata - A Father's Counsel In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, in the Astika Parva, we find the story of Rishi Shamika and his young son Shringi. King Parikshit, the grandson of Arjuna, went for hunting and became very tired and thirsty. He came to the ashram of Shamika, who was sitting in deep silence and meditation. The king asked for water, but the rishi did not reply because he was observing a vow of silence. The king felt insulted and placed a dead snake on the shoulder of the rishi. When Shringi heard about this, he became very angry. Without thinking, he cursed the king that Takshaka, the king of snakes, would bite him and he would die in seven days. Rishi Shamika then gave his son the advice which is found in Chapter 38. This advice is the main subject of this article. The Words of Shamika First Shamika first accepted that his son was powerful and always truthful. He said that Shringi never sp...

The Mind Before the Battle: Lessons from Krishna and Arjuna on Letting Go of Wrong Thought The Bhagavad Gita opens not with an answer but with a breakdown. Arjuna, the skilled warrior, stands on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and simply stops. His bow slips from his hand. He is not confused about the enemy in front of him; he is confused about himself. This is the real starting point of the Gita's teaching: a mind overwhelmed by its own thoughts. Krishna, acting as his charioteer and guide, does not immediately hand Arjuna a set of beliefs to hold onto. Instead, over the course of the dialogue, he works to dismantle the thoughts that are misleading Arjuna in the first place. A Path That Shows How to Think, Not What to Believe A true spiritual teaching rarely functions like a rulebook. It does not simply tell a person what conclusions to reach. Instead, it trains the way a person observes their own mind. This is very close to the approach found in later day Zen practice, where t...

There is a popular Bengali story of King Hemnak’s bride regarding the significance of Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi. This story has similarities with the tale of Behula and Lakhindar from the Manasamangal. Once there was a king named Hemnak. He was also known as 'Him'. The king had one son. After the boy's birth, upon reading his horoscope, the pandits (scholars) predicted that the prince would die from a snakebite on the fourth night after his wedding. The boy soon grew up to be marriageable. However, the prospect of his impending death filled the king with fear whenever he considered marriage. Finally, he arranged a bride for the prince. However, before the wedding, the king informed the girl's family about the royal astrologer's prediction before getting his son married. On the fourth night of the wedding, the new bride stayed awake all night. She also kept the prince from sleeping. Every time her husband fell asleep, she woke him up! How would she prote...

Dandini Vahari — Form, Symbolism and Spiritual Significance - Iconography of Warrior Aspect of Goddess Varahi Devi Within the vast landscape of Hindu iconography, certain forms of the Divine Mother remain known chiefly to initiated traditions rather than to popular worship. Dandini Varahi is one such form. Rarely elaborated upon in mainstream iconographic manuals, her description survives mainly through Shri Vidya scriptures and tantric dhyana verses, where she occupies a position of immense authority as the commander-in-chief of the celestial forces of Devi Lalita Tripurasundari. Her name itself, Dandini, meaning "she who bears the staff," reflects both her martial function and her role as an enforcer of cosmic order and discipline. Origin and Position in the Shri Vidya Tradition In the Shri Vidya school of Shakta worship, Devi Lalita is regarded as the supreme empress of the universe, and every empress requires a disciplined force to protect her realm. Dandini Varahi fu...

Many people buy gold and silver on Dhanteras, hoping for happiness and prosperity. At the very least, they buy copper, brass, or even steel utensils, brooms, and salt. But it is forbidden to buy iron vessels or things made of iron on this day. Do you know why? There are several reasons behind the advice not to buy iron on Dhanteras. One of the main reasons is that, according to astrology, iron is associated with the deity Shani Dev (Saturn). Therefore, it is believed that buying iron on this day can have a negative impact on the family. According to Vastu Shastra (traditional Indian system of architecture), buying iron on Dhanteras can bring back old problems. Furthermore, buying iron on this day is thought to increase negative energy. Since iron is a heavy metal, it is believed that buying it on Dhanteras reduces the energy and drive of everyone in the house.

The Great Being from the Sacrificial Fire - Putrakameshti Yajna Of Ramayana In the Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no son, though he was a great and righteous ruler. This was a big sorrow for him, because the Ikshvaku line had to continue. On the advice of his sage Vasishta and others, he decided to perform the Putrakameshti Yajna, a special sacrifice done for getting children. The sage Rishyashringa was chosen to lead this yajna, and he used the mantras of the Atharva Veda for the offerings. The Appearance of the Great Being When the yajna was going on, a great being came out from the sacred fire. He was very strong, very brave and shining with infinite radiance. His skin was dark and he wore red garments. His face was red, his eyes were tawny, and his voice was deep like the sound of a drum. He had a fine beard and hair, and his body looked pleasant. He had all the auspicious signs and wore divine ornaments. He was as tall as a mountain peak and walked with the pride...

Ratri Devata Varahi: Symbolism, Spiritual Significance and Modern Relevance Varahi is one of the Saptamatrikas, the seven divine mothers, and is regarded as the shakti of Varaha, the boar incarnation of Bhagavan Vishnu. In Shakta and Tantric traditions, she is worshipped as a fierce and powerful form of the Divine Mother, carrying the boar head and embodying raw, primal energy. Among the many epithets given to her, one of the most striking is Ratri Devata, the Goddess of the Night, for she is traditionally invoked and propitiated during the hours of darkness. Why She is Called Ratri Devata Varahi represents the deep, untamed heart of Mother Earth, the fathomless cavern that is dark yet throbbing with life. Just as night conceals as much as it reveals, Varahi embodies the mystery of the earth's depths, the unseen forces that sustain existence from below the surface. Tantric seekers who approached her through intuition rather than intellect understood that her power could not be ...

The Empty Cup in Hinduism: Why Unknowing Is the Highest Knowing Watch a newborn sleep. There is no worry on its face, no calculation, no comparison with the neighbour's child, no fear of tomorrow. It only wants two things: a full stomach and deep sleep. It has no opinions about religion, money, status or death. This is not stupidity. This is a state of purity that every tradition of the world has quietly envied. As the child grows and begins to "know" things, it also begins to suffer. It learns to compare, to want, to fear, to hold grudges. Knowledge, in this ordinary sense, brings with it worry. This is the seed of a very old and very deep idea found across Hindu scriptures and teachings: what we call knowledge is often only a more complicated form of ignorance, and admitting "I do not know" can be closer to truth than any confident answer. Neti Neti: Not This, Not This The Upanishads, some of the oldest philosophical texts of the Hindu tradition, use a met...
