Sri Mouneshwar is believed to have lived during the 16th century. His birthplace is Devara Gonal village in the Surpur Taluk of present-day Yadgir district, Karnataka. His father was Sheshacharya, and his mother was Sheshamma. They belonged to a devout and respected family of the Vishwakarma community, known for their deep faith and adherence to traditional values. A Messenger of Harmony and Spiritual Wisdom
Sri Jagadguru Mouneshwar is remembered as a great spiritual
leader who championed unity between Hindus and Muslims. He dedicated his life
to promoting communal harmony, equality, and brotherhood among people of all
faiths.
He composed thousands of Vachanas (spiritual verses) and
hundreds of prophetic writings that conveyed profound philosophical and moral
teachings. Through his works, he emphasized that all religions, castes, and
communities ultimately exist for the welfare and upliftment of humanity.
Tradition also attributes many miracles to Sri Mouneshwar.
He is believed to have performed remarkable spiritual acts in Tirupati and
Rachoti (present-day Andhra Pradesh), as well as in several regions of
Maharashtra, earning the devotion and reverence of countless followers.
Sri Jagadguru Mouneshwara Life History – Short Biography
- Sri
Mouneshwara was born in Gonal.
- His
father was Sheshappa, and his mother was Sheshamma.
- Sheshamma
was a deeply devoted woman. After serving Adilingeshwara for 12
years with unwavering devotion, she was blessed with the birth of Sri
Mouneshwara.
- During
his childhood, Sri Mouneshwara is said to have saved the life of the
prince of Surpur.
- At
Gonal, he relieved the poverty of Parvatappa Ganiger.
- He
offered a meal prepared with pure ghee to Sri Rachoti Veerabhadra Deva.
- He
displayed his divine greatness at the sacred pilgrimage center of Kashi.
- He
performed many miracles among the Muslim community in Vijayapura
(Bijapur).
- He
revealed his immense spiritual power through Gangappayya of Gaganapura.
- He
dispelled the darkness of ignorance among the Matha devotees of Shirasangi.
- At Linganabandi,
Lord Tirupati Venkateshwara is believed to have come to meet Sri
Mouneshwara.
- At Lakshmeshwar,
a woman named Piddavva, who had passed away, was restored to life
by Sri Mouneshwara and became spiritually purified.
- At Varavi,
for the sake of the devoted Jakkavva, he is believed to have
brought the sacred river Ganga from Kashi.
- Miraculously,
the footprints of Sri Mouneshwara and his sheep appeared on a rock.
- At the
monastery of Fakir Swamiji in Shirahatti, a dead calf was
brought back to life by the blessed Sri Mouneshwara.
Arrival at Tinthani
Finally, Sri Mouneshwara arrived at Tinthani.
- At the
place where he spoke with his disciple Gangappanayya, he commanded
the roaring Krishna River to remain silent, and the river is
believed to have obeyed his order.
- Sri
Mouneshwara showed Mount Kailasa to his disciple Gangappanayya at a
place now known as Kailasa Katti.
- He
worked at a forge at a place called Konana Gavi.
- After
performing numerous miracles, Sri Mouneshwara finally entered the cave (Gavi
Pravesha), marking the conclusion of his earthly life.
Every year, a grand annual fair (Jatra) is held on Bharata
Hunnime (the full moon festival) in his honor.
