Marehalli Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple Story Origin and Temple History
According to the temple's Sthala Purana (local sacred
legend), sages such as Suyajna and Lambakarna performed intense
penance at this site and prayed for the manifestation of Bhagavan Lakshmi
Narasimha. Pleased with their devotion, Narasimha Swamy is believed to have
appeared before them and, at their request, chose to reside permanently at
Marehalli.
The legend further states that the deity has been worshipped
here since around the 10th century CE. It is also believed that the
temple underwent renovation during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I, one of
the most prominent rulers of the Chola dynasty.
Local folklore speaks of an ancient Agrahara (a settlement of learned Brahmins) that once surrounded the temple. According to tradition, the settlement was eventually destroyed due to a sage's curse, leaving only the temple as a lasting spiritual landmark.
