It is believed that Goddess Varahi is the Kotwal (guardian or protector) of Varanasi. While Kalabhairava is regarded as the ruler and protector of Kashi during the daytime, Mother Varahi is believed to safeguard the city and its spiritual energy throughout the night.
Unique Darshan Timings (Morning Only)
One of the most distinctive features of this temple is its
schedule. Devotees can have darshan of the goddess only during the early
morning hours—approximately from 4:30 AM until 9:00 or 9:30 AM. After that, the
temple remains closed. It is reopened later only for Tantric rituals and
worship, during which devotees are not allowed entry.
Deity Enshrined in an Underground Sanctum
The idol of Goddess Varahi is installed in an underground
shrine. Devotees cannot descend into the chamber directly. Instead, they can
view the deity only by looking down through two small openings or windows in
the floor. As one of the Sapta Matrikas (Seven Mother Goddesses), Varahi is
depicted here with the face of a boar.
Tantric Significance
This temple is considered one of the most important Tantric
worship centers in Kashi. It is regarded as a place of exceptionally powerful
spiritual energy, making it highly significant for meditation and spiritual
practices (sadhana). Devotees believe that worshipping or having darshan of
Goddess Varahi helps remove negative energies and obstacles from one's life.
Location
The temple is located in the Agastya Kund area, near Maan
Mandir Ghat, close to Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi. Visitors must pass
through the city's narrow lanes and alleys to reach this small but spiritually
significant shrine.
