Balehole Sri Channakeshava Swamy Temple - History - Rituals - Pujas

Sri Channakeshava Swamy Temple is situated in the serene village of Balehole, in Kalasa Taluk of Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. The temple lies beautifully nestled in nature, on the banks of the sacred Bhadra River, surrounded by lush greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavan Vishnu.

History

The temple is believed to have a history of around 300 years. However, precise historical records or exact dates regarding its origin are not available.

 Daily Rituals & Worship

A variety of religious services and rituals are performed daily at the temple, including:

  • Hannukayi Seva (Fruit Offering Ritual)
  • Ksheerabhisheka (Milk Abhishekam)
  • Ashtottara Archana (108-name worship ritual)
  • Nandadeepa (Sacred Lamp Lighting)
  • Edepooje (Special offering to the Goddess)

Other Shrines within the Temple Complex

The temple complex also houses other important shrines:

  • On the left side: Sri Durgamma Temple
  • On the right side: Temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Naga Devata (Serpent deity)

Annual Rathotsava (Chariot Festival)

Every year in the month of January, during Pushya Shuddha Padyami, the grand Maha Rathotsava (chariot festival) is celebrated at the auspicious Abhijit Muhurta (midday).

During this festival:

  • Thousands of devotees from nearby villages gather at the temple
  • Devotees seek the blessings (darshan) of the deity
  • Special offerings (Hannukayi) are made
  • Anna Prasada (free sacred meal) is distributed to all

Special Religious Events

  • In January, a Chandika Homa (sacred fire ritual) is performed for Sri Durgamma in the presence of Sri Channakeshava Swamy
  • On the same night, a traditional Kenda Seve (fire-walking ritual) takes place

Navratri Celebrations

During the festival of Navratri:

  • Daily Chandika Parayana (recitation of sacred hymns) is conducted
  • The rituals are held in the sanctum of Sri Durgamma
