Dolotsavam at Kurmam Kurmanathaswamy Temple: A Sacred Celebration on Phalgun Purnima
The annual three day Dolotsavam festival at the Sri Kurmanatha Swamy Temple is a deeply revered celebration observed on the occasion of Phalgun Purnima. Located in Kurmam village of Andhra Pradesh, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Kurma Avatar, the divine tortoise incarnation. Each evening, the Utsava Murti is placed on a beautifully decorated swing inside the temple premises. The gentle swinging ritual, known as Dolotsavam, symbolizes divine grace and cosmic balance. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness this sacred moment and offer prayers.
Processions and Festive Atmosphere
During the festival, the deity is taken in procession around the temple streets in a ceremonial manner. The temple premises are illuminated, and devotional music including bhajans and recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama fill the air. The spiritual atmosphere reflects joy, surrender, and reverence.
Phalgun Purnima is also traditionally associated with celebration and renewal, and the temple observes the day with grandeur while maintaining strict adherence to Agama traditions. Annadanam, the offering of sacred food to devotees, is conducted as part of the festival service.

Lord Vishnu’s Kurma incarnation is described in the Bhagavata Purana during the churning of the ocean episode. The scripture says:
"Then the Supreme Lord assumed the form of a tortoise and supported the Mandara Mountain on His back."
