Kubera is worshipped on three main occasions — Dhanteras, along with Diwali Lakshmi Puja and Sharad Purnima. The day of Sharad Purnima is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Kubera. Kubera not only grants wealth but also protects it. He is known as the King of the Yakshas (Yakshapati) and the Lord of the ten directions. Sharad Purnima Kuber Puja 2026 date is October 25.
Kubera was born to Vishrava and Ilavila. Because he was
Ilavila’s son, he was also called Ailavila, and as Vishrava’s son, he was known
as Vaishravana.
However, due to his ugly appearance, he came to be known as
“Kubera” (meaning “deformed” or “misshapen”). He is described as having three
legs and eight teeth.
Kubera performed austerities for two thousand years to please Lord Brahma. Impressed by his severe penance, Brahma granted him divine status and gifted him the Pushpaka Vimana (celestial chariot), which was of equal prestige to that of the gods.
Although Brahma gave him divine recognition, Kubera, as the
lord of the Yakshas, was considered a demigod, not fully equal to the Devas,
nor could he reside among demons.
Since Kubera had no dwelling, Brahma asked his father
Vishrava to arrange a separate residence for him. Vishrava then appointed Lankapuri,
a magnificent city built by Vishwakarma on Mount Trikuta, as Kubera’s abode.
Later, when Ravana, Kubera’s half-brother, desired to
conquer Lanka, Kubera, following his father’s advice, left Lanka and moved to
Mount Kailash.
It is believed that those worshipping Kuber will be blessed
with wealth and prosperity.
