Kaup Moorane Mariamma Temple In Udupi, Karnataka

Kaup Moorane Mariamma Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Mariamma, located in the coastal town of Kaup (Kapu) in Udupi district, Karnataka. It is one of the three prominent temples in the area devoted to the goddess, along with Hale Mariamma Temple and Hosa Mari Gudi. Together, these temples form an important spiritual and cultural center for devotees in the region.

Though modest in size, Moorane Mariamma Temple holds deep religious significance. The sanctum houses a seated idol of Goddess Mariamma depicted atop her vahana, symbolizing protection, strength, and maternal grace. Devotees believe the goddess is highly benevolent and responsive to sincere prayers.

One of the most important celebrations at the temple is the Suggi Mari Puje, observed three times a year—on the Tuesday following Sankranti in the months of March, July, and November. These occasions draw large gatherings of devotees who participate in distinctive rituals rooted in the region’s folk traditions and agrarian culture. The ceremonies reflect a vibrant blend of devotion, community participation, and ancestral customs passed down through generations.

In addition to Suggi Mari Puje, the temple observes other annual festivities such as Atida Mari Puje and Jarde Mari Puje. While certain practices have evolved over time to align with contemporary sensibilities, many rituals continue to be performed in their traditional form, preserving the temple’s rich heritage.

During festival periods, the temple premises are beautifully adorned with colorful lights and floral decorations, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Devotees from nearby villages and distant places visit the shrine seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and protection. In keeping with long-standing customs, offerings—traditionally including animal sacrifices such as sheep, goats, and poultry—have been made by some devotees as acts of devotion and gratitude to the Goddess.
