Pulastya, a revered sage and son of Brahma, dedicated his life to deep meditation and spiritual pursuits. Despite the enchantments of apsaras, celestial maidens who sought to captivate him, Pulastya remained unmoved, committed to his ascetic lifestyle.
The Encounter with a Beautiful Maiden
One day, a sage's daughter of unparalleled beauty arrived, determined to win Pulastya's affection. Despite her persistent efforts, she could not sway him. Frustrated by her constant disruptions, Pulastya cursed her, causing her to become pregnant instantly. Unperturbed, she continued to disturb the sage. In a fit of anger, Pulastya cursed her again, causing milk to flow from her breasts.
Seeking Her Father's Help
Distraught, the girl ran to her father, seeking his intervention. The sage, alarmed and concerned for his daughter's reputation, approached Pulastya to understand the reason behind the curses. Pulastya explained that her persistent disturbances had led to his actions.
A Resolution Through Marriage
The sage expressed his worry about the societal implications of his unmarried daughter being pregnant and implored Pulastya to find a solution. Unable to think of an alternative, Pulastya eventually agreed to marry the girl at the sage's request. Their marriage was solemnized, and the girl, now Pulastya's wife, served him with utmost devotion and care.
The Birth of Vishwashrava
Moved by her dedication, Pulastya declared that the child born from the curse would be extraordinary, surpassing all in wisdom and knowledge. In due course, she gave birth to a son named Vishwashrava. As Vishwashrava grew, he inherited his father's spiritual wisdom and dedication.
Vishwashrava's Family
Vishwashrava married Lata, the daughter of the sage Bharadwaja. Together, they had a son named Kubera. Following in his family's footsteps, Kubera undertook severe penances, demonstrating remarkable devotion and discipline.
Kubera's Divine Blessings
Pleased by Kubera's unwavering devotion, Brahma granted him the boon of immortality. Recognizing his piety and dedication, the other gods bestowed their blessings upon Kubera, appointing him as the God of Wealth. Kubera's divine role as the guardian of riches and prosperity was thus established, making him an integral figure in the pantheon of Hindu deities.
