Kottarathumpara Mavila Kottam temple is located at Kottarathumpara
near Azhikode south in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavathi,
Vishnumoorthi and other deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival
is held for three days in Malayalam Meda Masam – Medam 7 to Medam 9 (April 20
to April 22).
The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kottarathumpara
Mavila Kottam temple are Thampuratty theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam, Gulikan
theyyam and Padaveeran theyyam.
This is a small shrine with a chathura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum. Some deities are worshipped on square platforms and under trees. The roof and walls of the main shrine are decorated with traditional temple motifs. Sankranti in every month is of great significance.
