Kanhangad Theruvath Sree Arayil Bhagavathy Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Kanhangad Theruvath Sree Arayil Bhagavathy temple is located at Kanhangad in Kasaragod district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Arayil Bhagavathy, Chamundi, Gulikan and other deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for two days in Malayalam Thula Masam – Thulam 16 to Thulam 17 (November 2 to November 3).


Important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kanhangad Theruvath Sree Arayil Bhagavathy temple are Arayil Bhagavathi theyyam, Moovalam Kuzhi Chamundi, Vishnumurthy, Chooliyar Bhagavathy Theyyam, Gulikan Theyyam and Padaveeran Theyyam.

This is a small temple with a chathura sreekovil for the main deity. The roof of the shrine is traditionally decorated. There are other smaller sreekovils and raised platforms for other deities. Some deities are worshipped under trees. Sankranti in a Malayalam month is of great importance. There is a beautiful pond attached to the temple.
