Edakkad Kakkanam Kottam Devi Temple – Kaliyattam Theyyam Thira Festival

Edakkad Kakkanam Kottam Devi temple is located at Edakkad in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Kannoth Bhagavathi, Sasthappan, Gulikan and several other deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held in Malayalam Meena Masam – Meenam 5 to Meenam 7 (March 19 to March 21).

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Edakkad Kakkanam Kottam Devi temple are Pulloli Thandayan theyyam, Sasthappan theyyam, Elladath Bhagavathy theyyam, Adimooliyadan theyyam, Athiradan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Karivedan theyyam, Thaiparadevata theyyam, Angakkaran theyyam and Bappooran theyyam.

This is a small shrine with a square sanctum sanctorum (chathura sreekovil) for the main deities. The roof and walls are traditionally decorated. Other deities are worshipped in smaller chathura sreekovil. Some deities are worshiped atop raised square platforms. Certain deities are worshiped under trees. The roof and walls are traditionally decorated. Sankranti in every Malayalam month is of significance here.
