Kottayampoyyil Kolavil Muchilottu Kavu Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Kottayampoyyil Kolavil Muchilottu Kavu temple is located at Kottayampoyyil in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Muchilottu Bhagavathy. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for five days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makaram 9 to Makaram 13 (January 23 to January 27).


The important theyyams that are witnessed at Kottayampoyyil Kolavil Muchilottu Kavu are Kannangat Bhagavathy, Muchilottu Bhagavathy, Narambil Bhagavathy, Puliyoor Kali theyyam and Vishnumoorthi theyyam.

This is a small shrine with a square sanctum sanctorum (chathura sreekovil) for the main deities. The roof and walls are traditionally decorated. Other deities are worshipped in smaller chathura sreekovil. Some deities are worshiped atop raised square platforms. Certain deities are worshiped under trees. Sankranti in every Malayalam month is of significance here. Vishu festival is of importance here.
