Vellur Sree Kozhunthumpadi Temple – Theyyam – Kaliyattam Festival

Vellur Sree Kozhunthumpadi temple is located at on Annur road at Vellur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to important deities that are worshipped in kavu, tharavadu and sacred places in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 20 and Kumbham 21 (March 4 and March 5).

The main shrine is a small square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil with a beautiful traditional roof. The walls too are decorated traditionally. There are other similar sreekovils and smaller structures. Some deities are worshipped on square platforms and under trees. Vishu is an important festival here. Sankranti in each Malayalam month if of great significance.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Vellur Sree Kozhunthumpadi temple are Bhairavan theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Karinkutti theyyam, Oorpazhassi theyyam and Panayakkat Bhagavathy theyyam, Vettakkorumakan theyyam, Madayil Chamundi, Raktha Chamundi, Vareekkara Bhagavathi Vallarkulanagara Bhagavathi, Vishnumoorthi,  Angakkulanagara Bhagavathi and Kuttichathan.
