Koovattu Sree Sasthappan temple is located near Champad in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Kuttichathan or Sasthappan. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for three days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 21 to Kumbham 23 (March 5 to March 7).
This is a beautiful small shrine with a Chatura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum. The roof of the sanctum is traditionally decorated with religious motifs. There are separate designated raised square platforms for other deities which are open to elements. Some deities are worshipped under trees. Sankranti is an important day in a Malayalam month here. Vishu in April is of great significance here.
