Chengal Sree Vayanat Kulavan Devasthanam Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Festival

Chengal Sree Vayanat Kulavan Devasthanam temple is located at Chengal near Pazhayangadi in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Vayanattukulavan and other warrior deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival at Chengal Sree Vayanattu Kulavan Devasthanam temple is held for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – (Kumbha 29 and Kumbham 30) March 13 and March 14.


This is a small temple with a chatura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum with traditionally decorated roof for the main deity. The other deities are worshipped in smaller sanctum, atop small raised square platform and under trees. Sankranti in a Malayalam Masam is of great significance here.

The important theyyams performed at Chengal Sree Vayanattu Kulavan Devasthanam temple are Kandanar Kelan theyyam, Gulikan theyyam, Kudiveeran theyyam and Vayanattu Kulavan theyyam.
