Alappadamba Mavila Tharavadu Devasthanam Temple – Kaliyattam – Theyyam – Thira Festival

Alappadamba Mavila Tharavadu Devasthanam temple is located at Alappadamba near Mathil in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to various deities that are famously seen in tharavadu and kavu in the region. The annual thira theyyam kaliyattam festival in the temple is held for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 25 and Kumbham 26 (March 9 and March 10).

This is a small shrine with a traditional Chathura Sreekovil for the main deity. Upadevatas are worshipped on raised square platforms and under trees. Sankranthi is the most important day in a month.

The important theyyams performed at the shrine are Mavila Chamundi, Neeliyara Bhagavathi, Rakta Chamundi, Vishnumoorthi, Vallarkulangara Bhagavathi, Gulikan, Vareekkara Bhagavathi and Pullnthattu Bhagavathi. Thottam and Thunikkolam are part of the festival.
