Thottinkara Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Thottinkara Bhagavathy Theyyam, also known as Thottumkara Bhagavathy theyyam, is that of a person who lived during ancient times and suffered due to wrong doings of local ruler. As per information, this is a female theyyam and is of a woman belonging to the Thiyya caste. As per Thottinkara Bhagavathy theyyam story, the woman had lost 12 of her children one by one after birth and to find relief from the intense grief she read the Ramayana. Being from a low caste she was not allowed to read the Ramayana. The matter was reported by someone to the local ruler Chirakkal Thamburan. The ruler tried to advantage of the situation but she strongly resisted his motives. He ordered burning coal to be put on her head. When the punish was meted out, she ran out crying naked and dipped her head in kakka thodu (rivulet). She walked into a nearby house where a lamp was burning. The elderly lady of the house gave her water and food and clothes to wear. Soon she died on the verandah of the house. The elderly lady got the body cremated and gave her all respects. Soon, auspicious events and better luck started taking place in the house. There were numerous inauspicious incidents and accidents in the palace of the local ruler. The ruler got inflicted with various poxes. People realized that the lady had become a Daivakaru and called her Thottinkara Bhagavathy.

Thottinkara Bhagavathy theyyam is annually preformed at Kannadiparamb Kaithala Illath Thaiparadevatha temple in Kannur, Kannur Cherukunnu Thottinkara Bhagavathy Dharmadaivasthanam temple, Thaliparamba Ezhome ParambathTharavadu temple, Kannur Kalliasseri Kolathuvayal Chirakutti Puthiyakavu temple (Vayalile kottam), Thaliparamba Keezhattur Vechiyottu Bhagavathi temple, Kannur Azhikode Sree Kumman Kavu temple and Mayyil Kandakkai Chalangotut Puthiya Bhagavathy Kavu temple.
