Pazhassi Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Pazhassi Bhagavathy theyyam is a mother Goddess theyyam performed at few temples, kavu, and tharavadu during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information this is a manifestation of Goddess Kali. As per Pazhassi Bhagavathy theyyam story, she is in a ferocious form and appeared at the Pazhassi tharavadu and was given a place of worship. She blesses the members of the family when they venture to into battle.

Legend has it that this is the Goddess that was born as the daughter of Yashoda and was replaced by Vasudeva for Sri Krishna in the prison of Kamsa. When Kamsa tried to kill the baby girl, it flew into the sky and predicted the death of Kamsa. This ferocious form of Goddess Bhagavathi is worshipped in many temples in the region.




Pazhassi Bhagavathy theyyam has a unique thirumudi or headgear or crown. The deity holds a sword and shield. She is known to depict some ferocious actions.
