Edalapurath Chamundi Theyyam – Information – Story

Edalapurath Chamundi Theyyam is a rare theyyam that is presented during the annual theyyam thira and kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, Edalapurath Chamundi theyyam is associated with Goddess Shakti and other Mother Goddess worship (Bhagavathy) seen in this part of the region. Edalapurath Chamundi story is that of her appearing from a 41 day homa. She was one among the 7 devis that appeared from the homa. She is believed to have helped Kunnummal Karnavar and Muzhikara Karthavu.

She helps a devotee to overcome obstacles and achieve peace and success. She is worshipped for attaining wealth and to defeat enemies. She is also propitiated to overcome the spread of infectious diseases.

Edalapurath Chamundi theyyam is performed at Kannur Chalad Kootteri temple, Kannur Chalad Sree Choyyan Devasthanam temple, Azhikode Moonunirath Pacha Tharavad Sree Vayanattu Kulavan temple, Azhikode Kuttichi Tharavadu Devasthanam temple and Kannur Koothuparambu Chambad Kurumba Bhagavathy temple.

This is a ferocious theyyam and she arrives holding a traditional sword.
