Chalil Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information – Thamburatti

Chalil Bhagavathy theyyam, also known as Thamburatti, is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam – thira – kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. The theyyam is performed in kavu and tharavadu (houses). As per information, the theyyam is associated with Goddess Shakti (Durga and Bhagavathy). As per Chalil Bhagavathy theyyam story, she is believed to have taken the ferocious form to protect the wealth and life of a staunch devotee of hers. Her theyyam are performed in those places wherever she appeared. She is believed to have protected animals and livestock.

Chalil Bhagavathy theyyam blesses devotees with peace and prosperity. She is also believed to cure contagious diseases. She is also propitiated to defeat enemies.

She appears in a ferocious form holding a traditional sword to protect the wealth and life of her devotees.
