Arathil Bhagavathy theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam – thira – kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. The theyyam is performed in tharavadu (houses). As per information, the theyyam is associated with Goddess Shakti (Durga and Bhagavathy) and is similar to Thai Paradevata who annihilated demon Darikasura. As per Arathil Bhagavathy theyyam story, she is believed to have taken the ferocious form to protect the wealth and life of a staunch devotee of hers. Her theyyam are performed in those places wherever she appeared. She is believed to have protected animals and livestock.
