Kankole Alakkad Kalarikkal Temple – Thira – Theyyam Festival

Kankole Alakkad Kalarikkal temple is located at Alakkad near Payyanur in Kannur district, Kerala. The annual theyyam thira festival in the temple is held for four days in Malayalam Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 20 to Dhanu 24 (January 4 to January 8). This a traditional temple which has links with ancient Kalari.


The temple has traditional Kerala style architecture. The deities worshipped in the temple are those widely found in kavu and tharavadu in Kannur region.

The important theyyams that are part of the annual Kaliyattam and theyyam festival are Mavila Chamundi theyyam, Narambil Bhagavathy theyyam, Oorpzhassi theyyam, Thaiparadevata theyyam, Ottakolam or Thee Chamundi, Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy and Vishnumoorthi theyyam.
