Kottathala Sri Krishna Swamy Temple – Festival

Kottathala Sri Krishna Swamy temple is located on the Kottarakkara Sasthamcotta Road at Kottathala in Kollam district in Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavan Sri Krishna. The annual festival in the temple begins with kodiyettam on Thiruvonam nakshatra day in Malayalam Meenam month (March – April). The festival concludes with arattu procession.

The temple has a vatta sreekovil and it faces east. The upa devatas worshipped in the temple include Ganapathi. The temple has a nalambalam, namaskara mandapam and dwajasthambam. The wall of the sreekovil has sculptures and is noted for its traditional architecture. The temple also has beautiful wooden sculptures.

The annual festival is noted for various Vaishnava pujas and rituals, ezhunellippu atop a caparisoned elephant and pallivetta. Kerala temple performing art forms, melam and traditional music are part of the festival. The festival concludes with the arattu procession.

The annual Gokulashtami or Sri Krishna jayanti is held with various pujas and rituals. Ashtami Rohini ghoshayathra, feast and other festivities are part of the important Krishna temple festival observed in Chingamasam (August – September).
