Vellanad Sree Bhagavathy Temple – Festival - Thookam - Pongala

Vellanad Sree Bhagavathy temple is located at Vellanad in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi or Devi. The 10-day annual festival in the temple is held in Malayalam Meena Masam (March – April) and ends on Meena Bharani day.

This is typical temple that one sees in certain areas of Thiruvananthapuram, which is heavily decorated with colorful sculptures on the outer walls. The temple has a chathura sreekovil. The sankalpam of Bhagavathi is that of Goddess Bhadrakali. Seeveli is held daily in the shrine.

The annual festival in the temple is famous for Thookam and performing art forms. The temple also observes unique Shakteya rituals observed in South Kerala.

Some of the other rituals that are part of the annual festival include Ottam, Paranett, and Nilathil Poru (once in two years).

The shrine is also famous for the annual Pongala festival.

Dikkubali festival is held once in two years.
