Valapad Vennikal Shiva Temple – Festival

Valapad Vennikal Shiva temple is located at Valapad in Thrissur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Mahadevar – Shiva. The annual Maha Shivratri festival which falls on February or March (Malayalam Kumbha Masam) is an important day in Vennikal Shiva kshetram.

The temple has a chathura sreekovil with a Shivling which dates back to the outer structures. The upa devatas worshipped include Goddess Bhadra Kali, Ganapathy and Sastha or Ayyappa. The shrine has a namaskara mandapam with a Nandi or Rishabham, Chuttambalam and pond. The temple has an architecture that is similar to Shiva temples in Thrissur district.

The Shivratri festival is noted for abhishekam, dhara, Tantric pujas and rituals, homam etc.

Mondays and Saturdays are important days in a week. Pradosham Vratam on the 13th day of a fortnight is observed here.

Ramayana Masam, Navratri, Vrischika Masam (Mandala Kalam) and Thiruvathira in Dhanu Masam are important in the temple.
