Thiruvathira Festival – Kandankulangara Bhagavathy Temple In Chittoor Sri Krishna Temple

Kandankulangara Bhagavathy temple is located in the northeastern part of Chittoor Sri Krishna Swamy temple located at South Chittoor, northwestern part of Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala. This is an ancient temple believed to have existed prior to Chittoor Sri Krishna temple. The annual Thiruvathira festival is a major event in the temple.

The shrine is on the banks of Agnihothra Theertham (temple pond). The shrine is nearly 2000 years old.

Kandamkulangara Bhagavathy is believed to be Goddess Bhadrakali.

Thiruvathira thalappoli is the main festival held at the temple during Dhanu Masam (Dec-Jan) every year. On the first three days, Thalappoli from various regions of the area arrive in the temple.

Parayeduppu (visit of bhagavathy through village to enquire welfare of people ) is held here. Devotees receive Bhagavathy with ‘para’ and ‘vilakku’. A procession on the occasion is received at the temple during night with ‘Para’ and melam. Customary practices like Ettangadi, ‘Pathira Poove’ etc. also celebrated during night. On the 7th day night after Thiruvathira, Theeyattu is performed.

On the same day midnight Guruthi is conducted outside temple premises. Only male members are permitted to attend Guruthi pooja.
