Thalayazham Thrippakkudam Mahadeva Temple – Festival

Thalayazham Thrippakkudam Mahadeva temple is located at Thalayazham in Kottayam district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadevar. The annual festival in the temple is held in such a manner that it ends on Thiruvathira nakshatra day in Kumbha Masam (February – March). Yet another important festival in the temple is the annual Mahashivratri again in Kumbha Masam.

Legend has it that the Shivling worshipped in the temple was discovered by Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. He happened to see smoke coming out from a particular spot and when he reached the spot it was from near a Shivling.

The first pooja performed to Shiva here was pantheeradi pooja and therefore even today this puja is of great importance.

A Shivling is worshipped in a square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil. The sanctum has a copper roof.

The shrine has a Mandapam, Nala ambalam, Balikkalpura and Vilakkumadom. All of which are covered with copper. Kodimaram or Flag staff covered with gold was consecrated in Kollavarsham 1085. There are separate shrines of Upa Devatas.

The priests of the temple are from Manayathattu Illam and Varillathu Madom.

The annual festival in the temple is famous for caparisoned elephants, procession, ezhunnallathu, Kerala temple folk art forms, pujas and rituals and melam.
